“Any mention of role-playing usually makes me uneasy, to say the least, so the thought of two solid days of role-playing did not appeal to me. However, thoughts of role-playing and video cameras were soon forgotten because of the pace of the simulation and the involvement level needed to keep on track with the activities.
I found that the simulation was very much aimed at the manufacturing team leader level, and having so many comparisons to my actual job made it quite easy to fit into this role. There were some difficulties dealing with some situations in the simulation the way you would in the workplace, but this could hardly be avoided unless the simulation took place in a real environment.
The development plan created jointly with my coach on the third day of the Team Manager Development Center highlighted the competencies where I needed to improve my performance. The coach gave immediate tips and suggestions as part of an action plan that could be utilised straight away. The final development plan that was shared with my line manager details deficiencies and specific development plans for improvement, along with strong points and evidence of such.
The TMDC gives feedback on performance, includes beneficial coaching sessions, and provides a development plan to take away. This is like no other training or development event I have participated in. I feel the experience has confirmed my thoughts on my own performance against the competencies, raised my awareness of my weaknesses and, importantly, given some development plans on how to improve.”
